How to Replace a Motorcycle Disc Brake

Install new liner. Make sure the new pad is the exact shape and size. If the two spacers are different sizes (which is common), make sure you know which spacer goes into which side of the caliper. Insert the gasket, carefully aligning the bolt holes with the holes in the caliper. Now insert the bolts hand tight.

Reinstall the brake caliper mechanism. Assuming the spacers are flush with the sides of the caliper and line up with the bolt holes, it’s time to secure the caliper mechanism to the front brake rotor.

Adjust calipers and brackets or fork bolt holes (depending on model). Insert the bolts and tighten with a torque wrench. It is important to follow the exact specifications mentioned in the owner’s manual. Wrong torque can cause bolts to snap off or come loose on the road.

Fully tighten the brake pad bolts. Remember, your brake pad bolts are only hand tightened. Now the caliper is secure and you have leverage to make tight allen key bolts easy. Remember to install cotter pins or other safety mechanisms if your model uses them.

Step on the brake lever before riding. Pushing the caliper piston back allows brake fluid to drain back into the master cylinder reservoir. The first squeeze of the lever will be held all the way to the handle with no resistance, just like there is no fluid.

Pump a few times until you feel the correct amount of drag, you can feel the brakes creating drag on the front rotor. As a final test, turn the front tire by hand to confirm that you can stop it by squeezing the brake lever. Don’t forget this step after the brake change.
